Travel plans don’t always come with months of notice – sometimes you book that spontaneous getaway, take on a last-minute work trip, or respond to a family emergency abroad. If your destination puts you at risk of cholera, you might suddenly find yourself asking: Can I still get the cholera vaccine in time?
At Brixton Travel Clinic, we frequently support last-minute travellers who need fast, reliable protection. If you’re looking to get your cholera vaccine in London, here’s what you need to know about timelines, effectiveness, and how we can help – even on short notice.
Why Consider the Cholera Vaccine?
Cholera is a bacterial infection caused by ingesting contaminated food or water. It can lead to severe diarrhoea, vomiting, and dehydration, which can become life-threatening if left untreated. The disease is most common in areas with poor sanitation and limited access to clean drinking water – typically in parts of Africa, Asia, and the Caribbean.
While cholera is not a risk for every traveller, certain groups are at higher risk, including:
-
Humanitarian workers or volunteers
-
Long-stay or rural travellers
-
Backpackers or those staying in basic accommodation
-
Those visiting during floods or natural disasters
-
Individuals with weakened immune systems
If you’re heading to a high-risk area, the cholera vaccine offers a practical layer of protection, especially in combination with food and water precautions.

What Is the Cholera Vaccine and How Is It Given?
The cholera vaccine available in the UK is an oral preparation called Dukoral. It is not an injection, but a drinkable vaccine that stimulates local immunity in the gut – where the cholera bacteria attack.
For full protection, Dukoral requires two doses taken 1 to 6 weeks apart. Each dose is taken on an empty stomach, at least one hour before food or drink, and comes with simple mixing instructions.
After the second dose, protection begins around 7 days later, and the vaccine provides protection for around 2 years in adults.
For children aged 2 to 6, the vaccine requires three doses.
What If I Don’t Have Time for Both Doses?
If you’re leaving within a week, don’t panic. While the ideal schedule involves both doses, getting at least one dose before departure may offer some protection and help stimulate a partial immune response. It’s not a replacement for the full course, but it’s better than having no protection at all.
Here’s what we recommend:
More than 2 weeks before travel: Book immediately – we can complete the full two-dose course and ensure you’re protected in time.
7 to 13 days before travel: You may be able to get both doses spaced one week apart. We’ll help you optimise the timing.
Less than 7 days before travel: We can still administer the first dose, and provide advice on how to complete the course later. We’ll also advise on strict food and water hygiene measures.
Remember: even if you’ve missed the ideal vaccine window, our team can still support your travel health with tailored guidance and preventative tools, so book in with us today!

What If I’m Travelling With Children?
If your child is between 2 and 6 years old, you’ll need to factor in the three-dose schedule. Ideally, these should be given over at least 3 weeks, so time is more limited. If your child cannot complete the course before departure, we’ll discuss whether a modified plan or strict non-vaccine protection strategies are more appropriate.
Children over 6 follow the standard two-dose schedule. All doses must be supervised by a parent or guardian.

Other Ways to Stay Protected
While the cholera vaccine is a valuable safeguard, it’s not your only line of defence. We’ll also advise you on:
-
Only drinking bottled, boiled, or treated water
-
Avoiding ice and raw foods in high-risk areas
-
Washing hands regularly with soap or sanitiser
-
Using water purification tablets or filters
-
Preparing a travel first aid kit with oral rehydration salts
This is particularly important if you’re unable to complete your vaccination course in time.
